Old School in Hale County

This old school building is in Hale County. When I was a kid, it was being used by a community church. More recently it was a community center. Now, it's in disrepair and has a warning sign.
What a shame. It is a great old building. I think at one time there was an effort to restore it.

Oh, this place definitely needs restoration! I'm sure it has many pleasant "memories."

Wish we could see the inside...makes me think of the elementary school I went to. Just slightly.

It does have nice structure and character...maybe you can save it?

I love old buildings too. It is especially sad to see village halls, churches and others falling prey to progress and people moving off the land.
Nice post.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm a teacher, so I always wonder how many little kids learned to READ there?

There are three such school-houses in Hale County: one in the Cedarville community in the southern part of the county; the Havana School; and this one in Stewart. The one in Cedarville is being restored with federal grant monies. The Havana School is used by the Havana Improvement Club; and the Martin-Stewart School house is also being used by a community club.
