Old Greenhouse

Posted by PicasaI love this old greenhouse. This is a drive by shot, so it's not worthy of the subject. I want to buy this greenhouse and restore it. Of course I feel that way about every old building I see.

Tuscaloosa CVB

This is the side view of the Jemison-Van De Graaff Mansion, featured here before. The Tuscaloosa Convention and Visitors Bureau is downstairs under that awning.

The Bama Belle

Here's the Bama Belle in afternoon sun. It's a replica of an old paddlewheel steamer that is available for sight seeing and dinner cruises on the Black Warrior River. Check out their website for more pics.

Art Deco Fountain

As promised yesterday, here's the art deco style fountain that was part of the kiddie pool at the historic Queen City Pool in Tuscaloosa.

Queen City Pool Bathouse

Featured on the National Register of Historic Places, built in 1943.
"Designed by architect Don Buel Schuler a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and built with WPA money, the pool was one of the finest in the state. The poured concrete bathhouse features a unique design of intersecting circles and arcs. The wading pool contains a delightful art deco fountain. Closed since the 1980s, the City of Tuscaloosa is developing plans for its restoration."Historic Tuscaloosa
In 2005, the plan was to reopen the building as a transportation museum. I'm not sure where the City is with its plan. The bathouse still sits vacant, boarded up, and the pool filled in with dirt. Tomorrow, I'll show you the fountain.

Facade Facelift

The Downtown Revitalization Project includes facade facelifts for older buildings that were deemed worthy of keeping. If you click to enlarge, you can see the original brick in the alley. I'm not sure if they cleaned and painted the front, or added new brick, but it's a different color.

Groundhog, Shmoundhog

These daffodils obviously didn't hear the Groundhog's forecast for 6 more winter weeks. Buds are budding, birds are singing, the sap is risin', yippee! Of course, it's freezing this morning, but spring can't be far behind these yellow lovelies.

Footbridge Reopened

Remember this footbridge from a January post? It spans a small slough/inlet off the main channel of the Black Warrior River and was under water then. This pic was taken from the opposite direction.

The River Returns

The Black Warrior River has returned to normal now after our January flood stage. See the lampposts? Remember them from this post?

Chuck's Fish

I'm not a fish fan, but people who are love Chuck's Fish downtown. Charles "Chuck" Morgan, the man for whom the restaurant is named, was a Civil Rights Era lawyer and activist and recently passed away. The restaurant is owned by his son. Sometimes they feature live music and often have specials combined with events at the Bama Theatre just down the street.

Cool old neon signage downtown near where the new federal courthouse will be.

Getting Ready for Valentine's Day

I love Valentine's Day. It's probably the chocolate, but anyway....
I crocheted this heart garland last week. The pattern came from Cindy at Skip To My Lou. I followed a pattern AND I actually finished a project in a reasonable amount of time, remarkable.

Skywatch Friday

Squirrels' nests way up high against a blue sky.
(and spindly branches in a tree badly butchered trimmed by the power company)
Please visit Sky Watch Friday to see lovely skies from around the world!

Windy Flags at Sunset

I took this pic on the drive home last night at sunset because I liked the flags waving pretty much straight out. It was very windy, and COLD. I almost deleted it because of all the other junk in the photo that I couldn't crop away. Again, bad photography on display. But then I noticed the cool light streaks at the bottom. Other people do it on purpose and it's an effect. I did it and have no idea how! Must be the hhhh...eeee...sss...iii...tttating shutter speed on the nighttime camera setting.

Remembering Fall

I'm reaching back into the archives to remember warmer weather, pretty leaves, and the path to my favorite place. (and ya know, because it's me, there must be power lines involved)

Another Warm Sunset Glow

I bet this sunset really warmed up the brick on my back porch. Let me tell you, that's the only warm thing outside these days!
