Kress Five and Dime

This is the old Kress Five and Dime store in downtown Tuscaloosa. It's been Spiller Furniture for years, but the sign at the top of the building is a permanent reminder of its original owner.
S. H. Kress & Co. had stores all over the U. S. from the late 1800's till the 1980's. I'm not sure when ours was built, but it is not nearly as elaborate or fancy as most of the pictures I've seen in other towns. Did your town have a Kress? Is the building still there?

Yes, We had a Kress, and the building is still on Broad Street in Selma. It is now Butler-Truax Jewelers and has been beautifully restored.
I remember shopping at Kress in Tuscaloosa when I was a child.

It may not be a fancy building, but it has a certain time-capsule style that you see all over the country.

My Dad started as a Mgr Trainee at this Kress store and he worked his way up to Director of Human Resources for Kress. He later became Director of Human Resources for Genesco the company that owned S.H. Kress in later years.
