This great old sign in Alberta City (part of Tuscaloosa) is on Hwy 11, the Old Birmingham Hwy, which becomes University Blvd. That road was the main drag into town before the I-59 was finished, and had several hotels and restaurants. The Moon Winx is a landmark in Tuscaloosa because in its heyday, it was one of the nicest. Now, it is mostly boarded up. The restaurant is closed and the pool is filled in. I think they may use some of the rooms as efficiency apartments. At least they kept the old sign. It was cool at night when it was lit, the eye winked.

bada bing bada boom! Jackpot! Fantastic find. Just love this. And the Moon Winx...the owner's had a great sense of humor. And love your new Postcards slide show.
Great sign. It's too bad that some of these character-rich places have gone by the wayside - literally.
I love these old signs, they have so much character.
Thanks everyone!
This sign is one of my favorites.
Love the sign. I hope they find a way to save this treasure.
oh, gosh! I love that name--Moon Winx!
Good Lord! That is so amazing! And so wonderful that it's still with us. With all the interest in retro culture I wouldn't be surprised if someone didn't try to buy it. I hope not.
This is a wonderful blog!!!! I love me some tuscaloosa history.....for years the moon winks was just a cheesy motel with a cheesy sign. Now that I learned a piece of its history I will look at it differently each time I ride by there.
Our Family has wonderful memories of THE MOON WINX LODGE, in TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA. My Husband was raised in a wonderful small place, MYRTLEWOOD, ALA. Later, his family lived in TUSCALOOS, ALA. When we went to Tuscaloosa, ALA., the first thing we always did, was to check into THE MOON WINX LODGE. With the beautiful tall trees, the restaurant on the hill with the trees, & the way the lodge went uphill, amongst the trees, it was peaceful and seemed sort of like home. When we first stayed there, our children were small babies. The last time, our Son was about 16 & our daughter about 15. They are now 44 & 45. There was newer places, but our hearts were with THE MOON WINX. I am from TEXAS & I love TEXAS, but the Southern States captured my heart, especially ALABAMA. We live in DALLAS,TX. and it's where our lives have been, but there is no place like ALABAMA. It is sad to know a slower, safer, more serene life, as times were when THE MOON WINX was open, are not here, anymore. My Beloved HUSBAND, died in 2009, but the memories we had of THE MOON WINX will forever be in our hearts. October 04, 2011- BOBBIE MORGAN & MY HUSBAND, GERALD (JERRY) MORGAN
