Postcard Tuesday

When the photo well is running low, I pull out the old postcards from Tuscaloosa's past. This is Stallworth Lake. It was built in 1918 and located at the foot of river hill. It was apparently quite the gathering place for swimming and other amusements. There was a merry-go-round at some point in the thirties. The city filled it in in the 40s or 50s and used it as a landfill. In the last 20 years, they built baseball fields over it. Now it is the site of our new amphitheatre, currently under construction.

A Hot Mess

In the south, a "mess" is a portion size. For instance, you might catch a few fish, just enough for a "mess of fish" to serve a few people. Or, you'll buy a "mess of squash," just a few for supper. Here's a mess of hot peppers. It's time to make pepper jelly and pepper sauce!

Museum Monday

The Alabama Museum of Natural History is in Smith Hall at the University of Alabama. The AMNH is celebrating its 100th year this year.

The lovely specimen hanging from the ceiling is the state fossil of Alabama, Basilosaurus cetoides. Here's a little closer shot. Note the grand staircase in the background. Smith Hall is an amazing building. Click to enlarge so you can enjoy the detailed moldings around the gallery and the skylight ceiling.

Summer Colors

Chilton county peaches to be frozen for smoothies. Home grown tomatoes for salsa and gazpacho. Cukes, red onion, lemons and limes from the grocery - ingredients for aforementioned salsa and gazpacho. Not pictured - peppers. I love summer.

You might be able to see him better if you double click. My dad says he's a "dive dipper" which I'm sure isn't the scientific name. Anyone know the correct term?

Here's a little better shot. I couldn't catch him in the water either. About the time I clicked the shutter, he was diving under. Tricky duck. He could stay under a long time too!

Skywatch Friday

Just a peek of afternoon sky as seen through the arches of Woods Hall on the University of Alabama campus. Woods Hall is the building behind Goldie in yesterday's post. It was built during Reconstruction using materials salvaged from buildings burned by Croxton's Raiders at the end of the Civil War. It was named for the University's first president Alva Woods and housed the entire University for about twenty years. It's Gothic design was patterned after buildings at Virginia Military Institute. Woods Hall now houses the Art Department.

Goldie

Here lies Goldie, a metal robot sculpture currently on display on Woods Quad at the University of Alabama. The artist is graduate student Joseph McCreary. Goldie represents the closing of Birmingham's Sloss Furnace and the end of the reign of iron and steel in the industrial age.

Ghost Sign

Another ghost sign in downtown Northport. Also, note the blue shirt in the right hand side of the picture. He's an employee of the City of Northport who waters all the planters every morning.

If you click to enlarge, you can see the string of little yellow bulbs above the awning out front. They've been there for many years to add a special glow at night.
