If you lived in Tuscaloosa, chances are you would know someone who worked at or had retired from "the rubber plant," BF Goodrich. This plant has been manufacturing tires for as long as I can remember. It is unionized and over the years has experienced many strikes, a buyout by Michelin, and unfortunately recent layoffs. But at least it's still here. The plant in Opelika, Alabama hasn't fared as well.

Chronicling the economic downturn in your community has to be difficult. I haven't been so brave and realize I should do more.
We've got three rubber plans around here. One shut down in the late 90's but was reopened. THe economies of the world change too quickly for companies that need long term stability.
PJ- I really meant to just highlight the major employers in our town, unforutnately, that includes commentary about difficult times.
Steve - This one has absorbed workers from other plants that have been closed. I understand that some of the Opelika workers will be able to transfer here.
I think Tuscaloosa is indeed fortunate that this plant is still operating. Too many such plants have closed over the years.
