You can hardly read it, but the sign says Belk-Hudson. This is on the side of the Mellow Mushroom building downtown, originally the Maxwell Brothers Grocery. We have a Belk in town now, but apparently many years ago, there was a Belk-Hudson. Belk is the department store that bought out Parisian a few years ago.

We have Belk down here. I even wonder if the chain started in Mississippi. It's an alright place to shop.
Halcyon - looks like BELK started in North Carolina in 1888 and is still run by the family - third generation! Not sure where the Hudson part comes in.
Belk's is one of our favorite stores...I suppose Belk-Hudson was a predecessor...love these old signs on buildings!
I"m O.L.D., I remember Belk Hudson!! I also remember when JC Penney was just Penney's! I could go on but I'll stop here. Yep, cooler weather and about time.

I think I remember the old Belk-Hudsons. Seems there aren't much variety in department stores now. Just Dillards and Belk.
I grew up in Charlotte, NC the home of the Belk brothers and their department store. A very important figure in Charlotte, John Belk brought the interstate I 77 to the city (crossing it at I 85), which made it one of the biggest trucking hubs in the southeast.
Thanks everyone for adding your memories and info!
I'm down for the count with the flu. Diagnosed Wednesday. :( Hope to be back soon!
Goodness. Even enlarged I couldn't see it. I think it's time I had my eyes re-checked.
Many, many thanks for your concern for us last week! It really meant a lot to me. Bless you.
Nice find. Not too many ghost signs left in Salem these days.
